Lower Level Renovation
Information about the library's upcoming renovation
Serving the community since 1901, the Johnson Public Library is a lifeline to all residents, providing various services, access to technology, and spaces for work, study, creativity, and play. In particular, we help connect our community to the greater digital world. The building has not had a major renovation since the 1960s and lacks the modern facility that it needs to provide 21st century services to its residents.
Throughout past and current strategic planning processes, teens have been identified as an underserved population in the library, largely due to lack of dedicated space and technology. With the recent move of the YMCA, the Library now serves as the only provider of a free, neutral after-school space for teens that is within walking distance of the middle school. The renovation will create a dedicated teen space for the first time (which will include an expanded collection, tables for homework and projects, and several computers), staff workroom, and, most importantly, a safe space for teens to be teens!
Additionally, the space will include a new conference/meeting room, encompassing approximately 275 square feet, accommodating 15-25 people. This multi-purpose room will be equipped with technology to host virtual and hybrid meetings, training, and workshops. It will also be available for use by local small businesses and educational organizations.
Three study rooms will be added to the lower level as part of the renovation as well. These can be used as a private space for telehealth appointments, job interviews, and virtual court—a need that we cannot currently fulfill. Hackensack lacks public meeting spaces and none of the library’s current offerings have the appropriate level of technology or connectivity for virtual or hybrid setups. Our four social work interns will use the meeting rooms to meet with clients. The rooms will also be available to the public for free by reservation.
We anticipate that work on the lower level will begin in November and take approximately six months. During this time, the lower level will remain closed to the public with the exception of our small meeting room and lower level restrooms. Disruptions to the main floor and children’s room should be minimal and temporary, however, there will be periods of time when the entire building needs to be closed to ensure the safety of our staff as well as the public.
