Become a library member!
Becoming a member at JPL is super easy. All you really need to show us is proof that you live in Hackensack. That’s it! You can bring:
-
Driver’s license or a State ID
If you don’t have a driver’s license or a State ID, you can use 2 of any of the following items:
-
Lease
-
Utility Bill
-
Tax Document
-
Bank Statement
-
An envelope that has a current postmark and date, and which has your name and Hackensack address.
Any child who resides in Hackensack and is in Kindergarten is welcome to sign up for a library card in the children’s room. A parent must be present and show proof of residence for the child to get a card. As soon as a parent or guardian signs for the card, you’re pretty much set!
If you’re under 18 but in eighth grade or higher and attending a Hackensack Public School, you can get a young adult card at the main desk. We’ll only ask to see one (that’s 1) thing and you can use your student ID.
Can't wait to get your library card? Start the application process online by clicking the button below.
Note for online applicants: Showing proof of residency will still be necessary to pick up your physical card at the library,
Borrow up to 50 items at once!
JPL's vast collection of materials will have all the items you want to enjoy.
JPL has over 170,000 books. Your membership card gives you access to almost all of them. Most of our books can be borrowed for 4 weeks, and you can renew them two times for a total of 12 weeks. New books and bestsellers go out for 2 weeks, with 1 renewal allowed. Due to high demand for bestsellers, we also have a "high demand" selection of books that go out for just a week.
JPL is FINE FREE!
The Trustees of the Johnson Public Library voted to make the Library “Fine-Free” on July 1, 2019.
JPL items will not accrue fines regardless of who borrows them, except for special collections such as hotspots, Kindles, and museum passes.
-
JPL cardholders are still responsible for fines on non-JPL items. Fines can accrue from items borrowed in person at other BCCLS libraries, as well as items borrowed at JPL that were requested from another BCCLS library. These items will accrue fines according to the policy of the owning library.
-
JPL Cardholders are still responsible for replacement costs for damaged and lost items.
-
JPL Cardholders will not be able to check out items if:
-
They owe a replacement cost for a damaged or lost item
-
They owe over $10 in fines
-
They have not yet returned an overdue item*
-
*Borrowed materials will auto-renew if eligible. If items borrowed are out of renewals, or if they fulfill holds for other patrons, the items will not auto-renew and must be returned as soon as possible. If items are not eligible for renewal and are still borrowed past the return date, patrons will need to return the items before they can borrow any additional materials.
