Resolution for the Designation of Johnson Public Library as a Book Sanctuary

Whereas, the Johnson Public Library is committed to serving the Community’s Destination for Discovery, Learning and Making Connections by providing access to a wide range of information, ideas, and perspectives that foster intellectual growth, cultural understanding, and free expression; and

Whereas, the Trustees hold that access to information is a fundamental human right, and the freedom to read, explore, and learn without fear of censorship or retribution is essential to the health of a democratic society and a founding principal of the United States of America; and

Whereas, there has been an increase in efforts to censor or restrict access to books, materials, and ideas that some may find controversial or unusual; and

Whereas, it is the duty of public libraries to protect and promote intellectual freedom and to serve as a safe, inclusive space for individuals of all backgrounds, identities, and beliefs; and

Whereas, Johnson Public Library is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and recognizes that the free flow of ideas is vital for the advancement of knowledge and the well-being of all members of the community; and

Whereas, by designating Johnson Public Library as a Book Sanctuary, the library commits to upholding the principles of intellectual freedom and opposing any attempts to limit or restrict access to books, resources, or ideas that fall within the scope of its collection policies and professional standards;


Therefore, be it resolved that:

  1. Johnson Public Library is hereby designated as a Book Sanctuary, affirming its commitment to protecting the right of all individuals to read, borrow, and access books and materials free from censorship or political, ideological, or religious interference.

  2. The Library will actively support the availability of books and materials that represent diverse perspectives, including those that may be controversial or unpopular, to ensure that the full spectrum of the human experience is represented in the library's collection.

  3. The Library will uphold its clear policies and procedures to ensure that challenges to materials are addressed in accordance with the principles of intellectual freedom and in consultation with the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights.


The Library will provide an open, welcoming environment where individuals of all backgrounds and viewpoints are encouraged to engage with the materials that reflect the diverse and dynamic nature of human thought and culture.
